I recently had to use our Trimble R8 receivers to spatially locate geophysical data. Using Trimble GPS configurator software I was able to make it spit out its location through the com port using a NMEA format. It worked, but it seemed to forget this setting after the receiver would get turned on and off a few times. I couldn't get rid of the default configuration fie. My work around was to bring a laptop with a com port (hard to find these days) and run GPS configurator on a daily basis... Anyone ever experience this issue, or might know how to make it remember that setting?

Thanks,
Dylan H

You need to create and load a power up file; it should remember the settings in there until you either remove it or hard boot the receiver. Try Configuration Toolbox instead of GPS Configurator.

http://www.trimble.com/support_trl.aspx?Nav=Collection-49573&pt=Configuration%20Toolbox

Download and install Configuration Toolbox from this link and create a new R8 file. Add in all of the commands that you need to make it run properly - if you need to configure both serial ports add two serial commands; if you need three NMEA strings at different rates add three output commands. Make sure you review all of the commands and add all of the ones that it needs to operate properly (like satellite). Save the file as a power up file; it will automatically name it power_up.cfg.

Thanks,
I'll have to try this with the other configuration program. I was following pretty much the same procedure with GPS configurator.
