We are setting up a permanent base at the office for our own network. We have been using SNIP as a caster to test everything. It works, but, the free version only works for 1 hour. Then you have to restart. It seems to work fine, but, before we buy it; I thought check for any feedback. Is there something better?
I used the LeFabure caster for about 8 years at the office. I never had any real issues with it for the first 6 years, then I switched from a (really-really) old Windows XP computer in the back closet to a brand new Win 10 box.
I believe that it ran for 3 years then had to be rebooted after a 24-hour power failure, then it ran for another 3-years. Literally. Once converted to Win 10, I don't think it ever ran for more than a month.
I have been using another caster for the past two months?ÿ with no problems and I really like it. IM and I can get you a demo copy. I would be interested in your experience.
But, doesn't your base have a caster or DIP built in?
If you are just doing serial to DIP, there are some slick < $30 serial converters that 'just work'. The ones I have only allow one remote connection, but that might be enough:?ÿ "WIZnet Serial-to-Ethernet Gateway - WIZ110SR". No computer, no OS, no daily backups, no anti-virus, no monitor, no keyboard/mouse. Just serial to DIP.

Hey Mark, I'll try to IM you tomorrow when I get back to the office. We haven't bought a base. We've just been using an old Topcon Legacy E. We were hoping to get by with that. We really just need the Network to establish ground control for my brother's drone projects. We have an extra Legacy and a Hiper+. I will still carry a Legacy and GR-3 with me. But, for days like today, when a cow pulled my best base point; Network RTK would have been nice?

Kevin, you seemed to be using the "evaluation" version of SNIP, which has more features to temp you to purchase it.?ÿ?ÿ The "free" version (officially called Lite) has no such time limits and supports up to three Base Stations (unlimited Client users).?ÿ That should do fine for the application you describe.?ÿ And you can connect the old Topcon directly to it with a serial port.?ÿ Just register SNIP and the time limit is removed.?ÿ PM me if you have any issues.?ÿ
If you're only using one base and not multiple different bases to build out a network, I would get an intuicom bridge and have that cast out your corrections over the internet. Way cheaper and easier to setup and maintain.
