Hi everyone!
Maybe is that a "trivial" question, but i have to explain that geodesy is not my "action field". So, that question is: If i want to look the deformation rate in volcanos and there are many GPS stations at the volcano summit, is better (in order to detect changes) a triangulation (in this case: areal variation) than a simple baseline? I think that with a triangulation is possible to obtain Data more robust and accurate. I donå«t know if iå«m confused but i appreciate so much your explain.

If there are "many" GPS stations, then you have both triangles and base lines. All of those stations should be observed relative to each other and an offsite, stable point. Then direction and velocity can be observed. And relative, gradient velocities too. So it's the array of stations, which is the best case scenario.

FWIW,

You might want to take a look at the approach in the venerable TRIMNET Users Manual available here: http://www3.telus.net/public/partrid/Documents/Trimnet%20Plus%20Use r's%20Manual.pdf

See page numbers 771-776. As you provide scant details, I do not know whether you are making the observations or performing an analysis. Lots of references available digitally. The works of Chrzanowski are especially recommended. Kuang's Geodetic Network Analysis and Optimal Design has some good details. Kuang's text not available digitally to my knowledge.

As mentioned by Mr Scott, hard to figure what's going on if every point in your project is moving.

Forming triangles allows you to infer much more information about the deformation than a baseline does. For example, you could calculate strain in addition to block displacement and rigid rotation; for background, see:
