NICE, Moe!
I think I saw one on Ebay yesterday that needed recells.
You can always hook it up to a battery if you have the box and cable.
Maybe that dude up in Canada can fix you up with something that works.
I actually like the one that someone makes up.
Let me look it up and post his info for you.
Do you have the battery door?

yes, i have the battery doors for both theodolites. there is an ebay person from WA, i think, that makes a stellar looking refit battery, but wants about 250 for one. i want to explore a more modest route, if possible.

i don't know about the canada connect.

to hook up to another battery is ok, i have some 12v dc. what if i get the polarity backwards, do i toast the guts of the theodolite?

Eddie-

I don't know if Art Dias is the "Canadian Connection".

What is great with Art is that he delivers and will tell you if he cannot.

http://www.batteryrevival.com/ serves North Americans.

Cheers,

Derek

If you use a Leica GEV71 Car Battery Cable 4m, 12V you are polarity protected. That and a Leica GEV52 Cable Instrument To GEB70/71/171 Battery cable would be the official Leica way to power from an external battery. The two of those together will protect your instrument, HOWEVER at around $350 for the pair (new cost), you might find it more cost effective to locate a dead battery and get it rebuilt. The advantage of the cables is they will power every Leica instrument made in the last 20-30 years (at least that I have tried) from ANY 12VDC battery source.
