I am in the planning stages of the flooring in my new house. In front of the fireplace, I would like to put a fireproof 6'x6' (or thereabouts) section of tile or mosaic with a compass rose or north fancy north arrow. I am fortunate in that the house is situated in the cardinal directions, with the fireplace on the south side. I have looked at a few places and there are some nice looking options out there but I thought I would ask on this forum and see what I may be missing. Does anyone have suggestions or ideas? The only thing that bothers me is that standing in front of the fireplace and looking at the directions, south will be at the top, and I am way north of the equator. North is up, but rather than rotating the house 180 degrees, I'll live with it.

Tom Bushelman, PLS

Nice idea!
Go with a geodetic azimuth from south, maybe?
🙂

[SARCASM]It doesn't have geodetic, magnetic, and grid on it.[/SARCASM]

I am also planning. Not going to do one inside, planning a nice deck on the lakeside, and will be inlaying a pre-build trex one I found on-line. House is parallel to the lake, so it will be twisted to the deck sides some, but should look OK. Only downside is all the extra supports under required for the different pieces.

One of the only two adverse possession cases that I have been involved in started because of a patio was over the line. Said patio had a real nice compass rose in it though. Too bad it wasn't even close to pointing the correct direction magnetic or otherwise. I don't know or care who won the case; too much spite on both sides for my taste.

Just build it facing south... And then rotate the house!
Great ideas.
I wonder if kent has a stick figure, for his house... 3mm wide...

in my very OCD mind I would prefer to stand in the middle of the rose, and whatever direction I am facing I would see the correct direction, +/- 5 degrees.
I prefer astronomic, just like my real life compass is set.

simple options:
1. tile is Very easy to cut, either cut the rose or the surrounding tile.
2. lay the tile in cardinal directions, cut the edges
3. leave your work at the office (my preference)

edit
PS: option #4: have the rose tiles custom made to fit your situation...

Go with state plane grid north, and include the convergence angle:skull:

another example of should've got it surveyed prior to construction

leaving work at the office has always been hard for me. I still drive down the road looking for corners sticking up or see fresh lathes and I'm thinking I bet that was so and so surveyor and why didn't the client call me!
