I have a list of 16 names and want to figure out how many A's, B's, C's....I will need to cut out, so I can iron them on shirts.

Is there an excel formula that will do this?

I know it's almost 10 o'clock, but my brain is still a little foggy on a Saturday morning....:-$

TIA

Outside of just counting them, which could have been done in the time since you posted, I would do a "find and replace" for the Letters a thru z, replace with a space, excel will tell you how many, it replaced for each one.

I am sure a formula could be written, but would take longer.

True, that's what I(we) did. :-$

But what If I(SWMBO) had 1,000 names...?

Thanks,

=LEN(A1)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(A1,E1,""))

where A1 houses a string and E1 the target letter to count.

take from some thread by a guy named Aladin:

http://www.mrexcel.com/forum/excel-questions/13213-count-letters-string.html

Now I would go all excel crazy on this with some $s and 26 rows for 26 letter, then sum the bottom. Works best with a 40"+ monitor, but at least you can fill right and fill down once you get it setup.

Do you have to worry about CAPS?

Thanks Thadd, that worked great!

Nope, no caps or lowercase to worry about....

Evidently not. If he had been married longer he would have told her that it was her project and to start cutting letters while he might iron them on.
At least that is what I would do. That accomplishes TWO things: (1) He scores as the Alpha Male of the pack and (2) those extended stays in the ICU are very relaxing and do not count against your vacation time at work.

My pleasure, I enjoy learning more about excel. Hope the wife didn't tell you to stop messing around on the computer and start cutting letters.
