Points and lines on the map define your geodetic network your are going to measure with a total station. Try different arrangments and see how you can improve your network.

You didn't answer my question,is the underlying map georeferenced so that you can pick your positions based on locations (ie street corners etc)

Is it really geodetic, in the sense that it deals with a curved (ellipsoidal) earth, or is it just plane trigonometry?

Sorry,
I use openstreetmap as underlying map, which is georeferenced. More information is available here:

http://www.openstreetmap.org/about

Reason for this choice: It is available around the world and if something is missing everyone can make improvements/changes. Normally these maps are quite good. However sometimes it is just wrong. Use GPS Position of your mobile phone to check if something is suspiscious. GPS Location is shown on map (use button in App)

You are right. This is not very good translation from the German expression „geodätisches Netz“.
Coordinates are transformed in a local system. I use this App for construction sites or monitoring Task. Here I see a big advantage in a tool like this. On your mobile phone on site. There is no need to deal with complicated ellipsoid calculation.

Even if it's plane, it's fine for an apriori analysis.
