OK, somebody sent me a Carlson file, that has 2 jobs in it, same coord system.
One layer has a group of points that are on a layer called "Old Job"
Another layer has a group of points, that is on layer "0". (My buddy does not follow good practice... in this, methinks) ANYHOW, all I want to do is to resequence the OLD JOB and add 200 to them, and assemble it all into one file. Looks so simple.
BUT how does Carlson make association?
That is, when I create the coord file from the screen, I get into trouble. That is, "UPDATE coord file, from Screen".
It seems that I have to generate the Cogo file, with both jobs in it, using merge, and then REPLOT the pnts, so as to make them all be associated with the stuff on the screen?
Hairless Nate.
Create a BRAND NEW .crd file. Call it OLDSNIT, or whatever. Set that as the current .crd file. Now turn on ONLY the OLD points. Now do the update crd from dwg. Then make ANOTHER crd file for ther points on the "0" layer. Call it OTHERSIT, or whatever. Now turn on ONLY the points on layer 0. Set OTHERSNIT as the current crd file. Again do the update crd file from drawing. Now you should have 2 separate crd files with the proper points.
Now you can merge them however you want them. How do you want the points "associated"? To what. The points should fit the linework etc. you can go in the points menu and on the right screen and set your associations. Then maybe rerun field to Finish?
In my drawings the points are separate entities from the lines and symbols. I use point groups under field to finish to group the points to appropriate features and/or elevations.
Maybe I am not seeing what you mean by the "association" (other than a really cool rock group from the 60's?).
Associated points means that IF I use "Update Points From Coord File" it does not recognize the ones on the screen, which I have moved the attributes all over, where I want them. So, Now I have to go all the way through, and move attributes again. Just to make a good clean file out of it, and prep it for field work.

The update the other layer of points to the new crd file. Be aware that you may be asked about overwriting points, say "all" be patient and wait for it all to happen. Then do the same for the other layer.
Get all your points in order before worrying about the attribute locations.
Freezing the layer with the points on turns off all associated attributes, but the attribute layers remain on for other points.

It was convoluted b4 I got it. When I freeze layer A, it freezes the pt no's of layer B. But when I go to layer B, and freeze it, all pnts and desc disappear. Something has gotten associated wrong.
Pnts in cogo file, associated with stuff on screen.

Az & cptdent & Paul, you are good folks.
You should each send Nate an email directly with your offers of help too, since he cannot send you emails with attachments thru this site.
By the way a lot of excellent Carlson support folks are tied up right now with an excellent 30th anniversary celebration and users conference.
I met my first real actual people from this site at our mini beerlegger tonight. Stay tuned for photos...
Sorry for the hi jack. Carry on.

I'll work on it some more. I just need to understand HOW the pnts on the screen, become associated with the pnts in the cogo file.
Also, I just discovered, that there are actually 3 sets of data here, and that is part of the confusion.

OK, here's what you REALLY need to do. Take a good tripod over to this client's office tomorrow morning and beat him to a bloody pulp with it. That should brake him from sucking eggs.
Only option I can see now is to bring in all of the points into one drawing and make one big crd file. Then you can try to see what point number range fits which job.
Say the original old job runs points 1-300 and the second set is 500-625, etc. you then can create a point group for each point range and THEN bring in the points by its group. THEN you can renumber whatever.
He's doing strange things with his points for no good reason. All of your points should come in on pntno, pntelev, pntdesc layers as point blocks and not associated with anything else. You can build your "associations" with point groups and expand on that when you run Field To Finish.

I GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Isolated the pnts, and made 3 files, renumbered them, in the individual files and then imported them all into one, and re plotted them.
Still, I want/need to know how associations work Associatians, that allow points in the cogo file, to become connected to the points on the screen.
Thanks everybody.
(I got this one solved, but still wasted alot of time, moving point attributes.) Because I had to replot them, from the cogo file, to make them associate.
