Trimble 5603 DR200 in need if service
Posted by drratiug-survey on January 30, 2019 at 5:20 pmGood Morning,
I recently acquired the new (to me) Trimble 5600 robotic total station. i charged the batteries, plugged everything in and it wont fire up or initialise. I spoke to my local dealer and they want to charge 700-800 to get it running (they would send it out for service, they no longer service in house). I found another repair place in ohio that can service it for $600.00
Any suggestions for other repair shops I can contact?

It internal battery is most likely dead, so the firmware will need to be flashed back on after replacement. Getting a replacement battery for that instrument is going to get more difficult. It’s been a discontinued model for a while now. Transit and Level Clinic in Cary, NC did our instruments when I was at an old firm. Great service always from them.

If you do get it done, also get them to align the tracker with the scope (and then tell me how to do it, so I can do it here, and not have to send it intercontinental).

Richard, I was a little stunned when I priced shipping to your county, so, I can’t imagine sending an instrument …
To the OP, if you find that you need some batteries I have several that I made for our use. We are not even going to use the 600’s even in a pinch, so I will sell them and they work much better than stock.

Yeah. Door to door, shipping an instrument from here in Fiji to USA is going to be US$400 each way. But we are stuck as nobody in New Zealand or Aussie services 5600’s anymore. The main instrument we use is a Geodimeter 650 DR 200, which is a beautiful instrument and can be phenomenally accurate – I got it about 4 years ago from a guy in USA (he posted a couple of times on here) and he shipped it to Fiji (I tracked it online and saw it go via Aussie!). At that time NZ Trimble were still servicing them, so I got it done there, and about a year later I bought the equivalent 5601 and also got that serviced, but for both they didn’t align the tracker (said they didn’t know how to), and then after that they stopped service altogether.

In reference to the OP, I checked through my emails and found that the USA company that we were looking at sending the instruments to was US Survey Supply. They have member on this forum. From the emails it looks like they confirmed they do (or did) the services in house (including the tracker).

Thank you for the help.
Any of you fellas by chance have any extra 606 prisms that you could spare?

check ebay.
I made up some of my own batteries (used 3S batteries) used small 3s batteries for prism too. Make sure you’re getting 12 volts. External batteries could be dead.

I have the Trimble super charger. I double checked by plugging the robot directly into the robot. The acu internal batteries could be dead, so my next step is to purchase a 4pin hirose for my other data collector that has Survey pro. That might help solve my problem.

OT – We had an office fire because of a Trimble Super Charger, be careful with it. Ours was on a metal shelf with an open back so it lit the entire office. All chargers need to be separate non flammable area, … my 2?

Give Seiler Instruments in St. Louis, MO a call. We JUST had our 5603 serviced/new internal batteries. Around $700 for a “basic” overhaul. Well worth it.

Just so you guys know, the 5600 series internal batteries can be replaced one at a time without losing the contents of the on board memory. I purchased a 5603 not long ago and discovered there was a problem getting any service on these units because they want them phased out. They claim the batteries are no longer available but I did find them to be plentiful on Mouser. I had a Geodimeter 610 Pro that has a EDM problem but everything else works perfectly. I noticed that it had the exact same board in it as my 5603 so I used it as a guinea pig. I replaced the batteries one at a time knowing that the CMOS that holds the memory only had 3 volts powering it. I not only replaced the batteries but installed a low profile battery holder so I would no longer have to do any soldering to replace the batteries in the future. This worked like a charm so I then made the same modification to my 5603 with complete success. You will need a small non conductive shield behind the batteries with the holder installed to prevent contact when you replace the cover. So you or someone good with electronics can lay this problem to rest. I hope this info helps someone facing the battery replacement problem. You need to do this before the batteries get to weak.

That is a great first post. Welcome to the discussion board and thanks for the contribution.

Dear @Asloan, Thanks for the pointer regarding replacing the 5603 DR 200 internal batteries. As the Gentleman from Fiji mentions nobody is in NZ or Australia is doing maintenance on older molder Trimbles or Geodimeters. I think I have tracked down the correct Batteries. Are they Renata CR2430. How many of them need replacing? Are there any other batteries that need replacing inside. Thanks a lot for your very helpful post.

Hi Richard, I have been driving Geodimeter 610 Robotics since 1998 and still continue to do so here in Perth WA, there is a guy called Chris Yang at Sitech Osborne Park in Perth that still services the 610R and replaces the batteries, I have a few spare sets that I use for parts

@steve-mac
Sweet, thanks. I’ve got two 650’s – one fully operational and the other runs but the keyboard has lost its programs – plus a 5601 that is fully operational but has poor tracker alignment. I’d like to get the 5601 sorted sometime.

1 have 2 or 3 spare 606 prisms, which connection do you have, the pins in the top of the power stick or the small cable from the power stick, I have both
