I’d suspect that the instrument batteries have gone flat and therefore the firmware on the instrument has been lost. The instrument will still turn on and rotate via the thumb-wheels, but the CU will not recognise the instrument. This happened to me a couple of months ago (I posted about it) on a Geodimeter 650 (“same” as a 5601).
I also have a 5601 with an ACU running Survey Controller. If I get time on the weekend, I will put the ACU on the “dead” 650 and see if I get the same message as you.

I don’t think anyone responded but I’m fairly sure that the upshot of that thread is that these parameters are unique to an individual instrument and therefore if they are put on a different instrument, it wont work accurately.
@richard-imrie plus there is huge table of constants that’s uploaded into angle sensor board on each switch on.
