Topcon Hiper + vs Epoch 50
Posted by cadtechie on March 10, 2019 at 4:45 pmLooking at using either a Hiper + or an Epoch 50 as a VRS network rover. I have the hiper + but would have to pay $1000 to add Glonass capability, or I can purchage an epoch 50 for $2000. Would it be worth paying extra for the epoch 50 or should I just stick with the Hiper and add Glonass? I would like to get some opinions on reliability between these 2 units….
thx

Best to see which of these will still work after the GPS Week Rollover event on April 6, 2019.

I’d like to know the answer regardless of Rollover in a month, if anyone knows.

A quick search shows the Epoch 50 may get signals L1/L2(C)/L5. I don’t think he Hiper+ can get L2C and L5. Therefore the Epoch 50 may be a better choice.

“Which GPS is. Best”.
Best for what?
You know, we all want our gps to:
Never be wrong. (Init is NEVER wrong) this error is typically 2 to 6 ft.
Shoot perfect accuracy, to 4 decimal places, 24/7. This is the shot refinement problem. Init is good, but shot is only good to 0.12′.
Hooks up to corrections real easy, and simple. Either your base, or other. Does cell phone corrections. Everywhere.
Cost less than $500 or 1000.00
Always work.
Never have dead batteries.
Have a radio installed, for your favorite music.
Get up, and go to the next point, via voice command.
Can beam you a McBurger, complete with grilled. Onions.
Spot a monument you missed.
Waterproof.
Shockproof.
Trouble is, they all work. But some do some things better than others.
It’s just not so simple to compare these. What’s best?
Dunno. What’s your priorities?
You can buy a new gps system, and feel disappointed. Then, it gets a software upgrade. Now it works great.

The Epoch 50 is more advanced than the Hiper +. I understand that is has a R8 model 3 board in it, so I assume the thing will be pretty darn reliable. I have verified that it will be fine after the GPS week rollover also. I just don’t know anyone that have personally used an epoch 50 to get the pro’s and con’s on the unit. I have heard they are pretty rock solid.

What I am looking for is some opinions from users that have used the epoch 50 and the Hiper to give some pro’s and con’s on the units. I have used the Hiper line, but I have never used the Epoch 50 or personally know anyone that has. The Epoch is a little more advanced, but I don’t know what its drawbacks are, if any.

What is the support status on these units? I’m not fully conversant on all the variants of the “Hiper” series, but I know that some of them are unrepairable due to lack of parts. If yours is one of them, I wouldn’t bother throwing any new money at it.

I have a Spectra Precision Epoch 50 system with a Ranger data collector. I bought the 2 receiver system used approximately 6 years ago. I only use 1 receiver which I connect to the VT VRS network or I use OPUS. I use my smart phone as a mobile hotspot. The system has worked well. Reliable and quality data. The receiver battery life is the weak point. To work a full 8 or 9 hour day you might need 2 to 3 batteries depending on the temperature. But it is not that big of a deal to me. The Epoch 50 was discontinued either last year or the year before. So parts and service will become an issue at some point. My dealer thought that the receivers I own have the firmware that won’t be a problem for the GPS week rollover.

Thanks Les. I would be using it pretty much in the same way as you have here on the KYDOT VRS. The battery issue shouldn’t be much problem for me because I will be using it for side work, so I won’t be running all day every day. I have verified that it will be good to go with the GPS week rollover. Thanks for the info.
