Not sure i’m up on the Android thing. I haven’t seen The major players in the GPS Engineering/Construction Industry embracing Android as yet.
Mayor players develop their field data software on windows platforms from 20 years, so they are not happy to move on.
Current Leica controller, CS20 is vintage device with obsolete specs, weight 1.1 kg, 2GB RAM, 4GB ROM, 1GHZ Processor from 2007 rok, 5” 800×400 display and Windows Embeded 7 OS. It costs about 4200 USD so you can have like 3.5 new DELL XPS business grade laptops for it, LOL.
Mayor players try to sell their old solutions as long as possible and this is the only reason they still push Windows devices into market.
At this point, the mayor player, Trimble, ported their Access software to Android. Topcon has also Magnet Field for Android.
” 3.4, or 3.5 firmware to play with” you don’t, or i didn’t see, you mention what receivers (models) you are trying to update. You need to connect them to PC and use pccdu or tru and find out what Receiver board you are using. you can’t just load 3.4 or 3.5 if it’s not for the particular board or model receiver. If it wasn’t on the list i linked you, it’s not developed, or supported. the topcon site is pretty specific on which download you need. ‘generally’ if they worked for you at one time, they should still work, void hardware issues. A firmware update isn’t going to bring them out of a trance and make them new or even work. i can say from exp., jumping on a newer firmware can make them NOT work, and only going back to older firmware can bring back operation. i wouldn’t say that’s the norm. but i Know it Can happen.
like i said, i may be emerging from rock…

yeah, and windows will run google android apps, and android can run windows, IOS on android, windows on IOS, , on and on.. Don’t get me wrong, i’m not saying you’re wrong/off base.
But, Thats not what i’m Seeing. The Local Trimble reps here, just Demoed their setup (or what they are selling) a few days ago. All to work alongside their machine control, satellite recievers, base & rovers. Data Collection was TSC7 with windows 10 pro, trimble site works or something works. And it works along with their office software they sell, that, i’m pretty sure, isn’t running on a $99 Chromebook. i was too busy tryin to figure out who, in their right mind, is gonna want that gigantic hammerhead (TSC7) hooked to a pole, walking around. (no offense to all yawl that bought one)! Oh, you could see all the little 3d triangle from the surface model, where the dozerblade is going to, Miraculously, find it’s way to Cut or Fill 10 feet!! of dirt, where a curb island goes….. And As far as Topcon, and Magnet – The equipment dealers we see will not Touch Android. Was told No, they won’t Sell you, or Support, Anything that doesn’t run on Windows 10/11. That has been about a year, so, maybe they got that rock off of them. And lastly Carlson. I can’t find any software or hardware, gps, data coll., office suites, that Don’t use Windows. The Android i have seen seems to be for proprietary chinese branded satellite recievers. (they aren’t getting supported by carlson, topcon, trimble, etal., so, what else can they use, but android). H* cheap chinese phones lock into 4+ constellations, with approx. location, Now, without effort. I would think android already has it’s paws all over the gps/location/software scene. But not in a Precision, Professional Setting – Mainstream way, as of yet. I’m not an Expert – For all i know the gps receivers themselves run on it. To those that enjoy not paying an arm and a leg for Good Tech, i’m sure it will be a welcomed trend. Everything Has Evolved, but, If you Simplify things, the ‘competing’ platforms are still DOS vs. UNIX. Same battle we had in the 1980’s. Except reversed, back then, Unix had the stranglehold on High end industry and Dos was for the masses. I gotta feeling MAC is feeling left out of this ‘discussion’ (i’m glad)…. 🙂
