Topcon FC5000 with Pocket 3D question,
I was helping a friend yesterday, trying to setup a job in Pocket 3D without doing a “localization”. Mostly because the job is 100 foot wide and 16 miles long (road).
I got the impression that Pocket 3D is very limited in what It will do. Was that the intent or has topcon gotten that far behind? This is my first experience with Topcon since Survey Pro with Robotics from 15 years ago.
How would I import a Trimble *.dc file into the Pocket 3D?

You would manually type in the coordinates and lat/lon values for your localization for your control points.

I tried that but the job is 16 miles long East and West. I had about 0.2 feet residuals at each end and the middle which sorta indicates that it is using a Mercator projection instead of a Lambert projection. I couldn’t find any way of changing that or even listing what was used.

For a project that long, I would break it up maybe into 3 segments to reduce distortion.

Topcon magnet can convert the dc to gc3 format. Pockect3d is not limited, it is dumbed down, you just need to know where to look and how. On a long Road project I would NOT use a localization in any GPS system. If this is a DOT job then use State Plane Projection. If not still use SPC. Never localize it will introduce more error.

I’m not sure if he has Topcon Magnet but is sounds like he needs it. The project is State Plane X 1.00012 and Pocket 3d has a place to add a scale factor or surface adjustment factor. Without being able to look at the data, I don’t know where it is scaling from. Magnet Field ask you where to scale it from. Pocket3D does not.
Thanks for the advice, I’m gonna try talking him into getting Magnet Field.

If you’re not converting from DC format, No need for Magnet. In Pockect3D set up the SPC system, and load the GEOID, done.
Call me if you need further help. Have the contractor hire me to train them and you.

Hey mate,
A bit hard to remember without it sitting in front of me, but to check which projection a geoid by going through DATA>CONTROL POINTS>OPTIONS. At least I think that’s the path, once you find it you can switch from a Localisation file to a projection and geoid.
In this instance I’m inclined to agree with Lee, using an established co-ordinate system is probably the safest way to keep yourself out of trouble, but I’m not familiar with your project. Good luck 🙂
