Structure Not Appearing in Profile – Civil 3D
Posted by ncsudirtman on November 12, 2020 at 2:45 pmOk so I did some googling & reading for the last 30-45 minutes on the Autodesk forum to no avail… but I’ve got two C3D pipe network structures sitting side by side (~6′ feet apart) that won’t project/appear on the C3D profile. All other structures on this particular street’s alignment show up just fine when you select them to appear in the profile view. But these 2 structures are associated with this alignment as well under their structure properties and the alignment itself extends thru the radial point of the cul de sac to the edge of R/W, while the actual structures, a double catch basin setup composed of two individual structures with a nipple pipe stub between them, is only situated between EOP & BC so it’s well within the alignment’s length. And what is even stranger is that all pipes connected to these two catch basin structures show up in the profile just fine haha? I’ve setup countless C3D files this way before without any issue so I’m not sure what gives now… Anybody else might have had a similar issue & can offer advice?

Can you attached screen grabs of the plan view of the alignment/pipe network and one of the profile where the structures should appear?
I’m sure you probably have checked these, but can you confirm that the structure style is set to be visible and using a layer that is turned on? Also, I would check that the elevations for the structure fall within the profile elevation range.
I can’t recall ever having structures that close together. Does the structure style you’re using have a width that would cause these two structures to overlap, and maybe that’s why they’re not showing? I’ve never had that happen unless it was a style or elevation issue.
see attached screen shots in the PDF (sorry sort of grainy from my laptop & I haven’t quite cleaned up the plan view yet). But I can’t get the two structures “DBL CB #16” and “DBL CB #16A” to show up in the profile yet all others on the street & even those at the intersection associated with the other street show up just fine. I’ve tried laythaw/layon commands through the viewport for the profile, checking the structures’ properties & even played with the C3D structure styles, part type & part rules but no luck. The rim & sump elevations seem to be ok relative to the profile grid’s elevations also. THE ONLY thing that I can possibly think of that might have hurt me here is that I initially only ran my alignments’ geometries to the radial point of the cul de sacs, then told C3D to generate me some profiles (existing & proposed w/ assembly & corridor) before realizing that the originally drafted & created alignment probably needed to go all the way to the R/W boundary in order to show these two structures past that radial point. But, I have gone through the toolspace prospector and told all the alignments, profiles & other stuff to refresh as well as looked into a few other areas. No luck & I’m about to the point of “hey just draw something that mimics the other structures appearance & create a multileader text box with the appropriate pipe invert info to move forward” haha
I know the style has to be visible if the other structures are showing up in the profile up the street because they all share the same exact style. Yes the rim & sump elevations fall within the elevation range specified for the grid/profile. as for the overlap I don’t think that is it either as I have used the same style before on probably a dozen other projects & unless the pipe diameter forces me to use an oversized box, the two inlets for a double catch basin scenario like this will typically always be only 6′ apart center to center of grate. and these pipes are only 15″, 18″ & 24″ out the back of the main junction inlet. I honestly think my issue may be that I adjusted the alignment after creating the profile & pipe network but at this point if that’s it I’ll just do like I told Cameron above & draft in a quick structure to match the others
Any chance structure masking in profile plays in? Would you be comfortable posting the dwg by dropbox or something?
ddIf I put on my Captain Obvious cape again, I would next check to make sure that those structures are checked to be included in the profile view. I’m going from memory here, because I’m working for a Carlson firm now and not a C3D firm, but if you go to the Profile View Properties, there should be a tab there for Pipe Networks. That will be split for pipes and structures, and the boxes should be checked on for the structures to be shown within the view.
I have had issues in the past when I’ve adjusted either the beginning or the end of an alignment. Modifying anything in the middle never caused me problems, but I do seem to recall issues when I’ve adjusted either end. You do seem to have everything else showing up though, so I don’t think that’s your problem here. You stated earlier that your structures had the alignment specified, and if it’s giving you a station and offset, then I doubt that’s your problem (though I do wonder why your finish grade line changes from red to white).
One last thing. It looks to me like there’s a rim trying to peek over the top of the pipe. What is that? That wouldn’t quite make sense either, since your structure should still probably show, but it has me curious. One more last thing. Are there any network rules that are being broken that might cause problems? I don’t see an information circle there (whatever you call those…I always had them turned off) so that’s probably not it either.

yea… that was part of the design profile’s street grade where I only ran it to the radial point of the sac. but i wouldn’t think that would affect it right? I mean I’ve done it that way many many times before without issue
Are you using this particular structure, DBL CB, anywhere else in the network and they’re showing correctly in those locations? Just trying to eliminate structure style problems as a source.
Also, is it possible you have the pipes into and out of the problem structure connected to each other and not the structure itself?

1) good eye as I missed that. the thing over the top of the pipe was actually the 6′ nipple/stub pipe that joins the 2 inlets that I use to make it a double catch basin. but it doesn’t seem to be a problem from what I can tell.
2) yes there are information circles but when I hover over them they state that I simply did a “edit label text” adjustment. I added a line underneath the original alignment’s stationing to do a station equality for where the structure lies on another alignment. granted I’m sure there’s a way to do this properly in C3D but I’ve always found it easier/quicker to use the query command to discover the station & offset of a structure then just type that in using the edit label text command
btw I LOL’d at the captain obvious line earlier haha
@dave-drahn
I don’t think that’s the case here? honestly after I replied last night I just quickly drafted up the structure with a polyline, some hatching & a basic multi-leader to reflect what I needed. At this point it’s cost me quite some time & I needed to get these plan profile sheets finished up earlier this week haha
For the station equation, add a new Reference Text component to your label. Add text for both the station and the alignment name. Makes life so much easier!
Glad you liked the superhero line. You know what you’re doing, but sometimes it’s easy to overlook something simple.
I used to have a draftsman at my old job & she knew this program better than I did most days. she was also super helpful at figuring these little issues out typically after 5-10 mins – I miss having that extra set of eyes. typically I’m peculiar enough to get the design conveyed correctly or the notes right but I miss the simple things for over-analyzing the big things
