SOKKIA GRX3 & SOFTWARE
Posted by Ken Moran on March 18, 2019 at 1:51 amLooking for opinions regarding Sokkia GRX3 GNSS and their field and office software. Also their Robotic TS. I’m going to purchase new equipment and my local dealer says Sokkia is the package to use with 3rd party data collection. I have Carlson that I will continue to use.

I got SOKKIA ix 1003 with Carlson Surveyor Plus DC Carlson SurvCE 5.08 on board. Worked for a couple of jobs. Used it for topo data collection. Robot didn’t track the 360 prism when the prism is too close ( 1-2 metres). Previously worked the same DC with SOKKIA SRX. New set up feels faster and better tracking. The new RC-PR5A is lot more lighter than older RC-PR3. Still need to see how it works with traverse closing & setting-out. Let me know how you go with passive target tracking.

I have both the Geomax and Sokkia Robotics. I find i have better connection with geomax than sokkia and both are conencted to my DC via bluetooth carlson survpc. The sokkia sometimes while taking measurements will have timeout errors or have problem finding the prism even with the PR5 attached.
While the Geomax is not the perfect total station as it is slower than the Sokkia and it eats through my batteries daily. My Sokkia can last one battery a day but the geomax needs 2 batts to last the day.

Geomax Zoom 90 works perfectly with Carlson Survce and Survpc. About batteries , I have Leica GEB 222 and I get a day and a half of use out of it. I personaly prefer a robot that finds any passive prism to one that needs a battery powered LED array at the pole to lock on the target. So far I had 0 problems with the robot locking on something else other than my prism. For peace of mind, I always keep the guide lights on. A 1″ Zoom 90 delivers a repeatable 2mm accuracy at 250m using Leica round prism , an 8′ bouble and a bipod.

Thanks very much for sharing. Looks like it’s worth give it a try with Geomax Zoom 90 next time. I also prefer a passive prism to track rather than RC5 on the pole but that’s the SOKKIA way. Anybody has experience with SOKKIA ix with ATP1 360 prism without the RC unit?
