for an IP camera, the hackers need to see them and no sense in putting them outside your firewalled network. I agree with most: no proprietary formats, avoid manufacturers clouds, avoid subscriptions and if long term use then wired. I may look for wireless to fill in spots but not if I can get POE to the space.
@williwaw We just have them replaced at shop that’s buying (maybe indirectly) from the thieves–I think both cost around $1k each. ??? ???? ??? We didn’t even call the insurance company about them.
I’m just one of those evil GIS people. Bwah-hah-hah! Seriously, I do coordinate systems and transformations at Esri.- Posted by: @jitterboogie
You might just start off with a bunch of motion detecting lights that are very bright and in all locations that light up the yard.
I’ve lived in the same spot since 1998 and back then crime was nonexistent. Fast forward and demographics have changed so now theft and burglary is common, assaults on women too. The landlord installed motion detection lights which helped and recently installed a camera system but the maintenance guy I know said the cameras are a waste of money in that nobody’s monitoring them and they’ll only view/release the footage to the cops after someone files with the cops concerning a crime. Also the tapes are rolling overwritten every month so the old tapes are not available.
Back in the early 2000s they had a night guard patrolling the complex and that was 100% effective, but the landlord decided that was too expensive and fired him. I think there’s 2 scenarios here, your house which because you’re there at night only needs a yard dog and a shotgun, and your office, which needs major fencing, security cameras/lights, and vehicles in locked garages. You can get insurance discounts by armoring up your office, which may pencil out.
The worst thing about theft/burglary is you never get to confront the perp. Except, one time in my life one busted into my car and stole everything but I caught him in the act. He outran me but I dialled 911 in the nearest store (he’d stolen my cell phone) and lo and behold within minutes several squad cars and a police helicopter showed up and after telling them which way he went and a rough description off they went in hot pursuit. So I’m next to my car being interviewed by a deputy cop, what is the perp wearing, height, weight, what did he steal yada-yada and I look across the street and say there’s the guy on the sidewalk, alerted the interviewing cop and she gets on her radio and within 30 seconds squad cars storm the street, drop the perp to the ground, cuff him and a confab occurs 20 minutes later. First, they spread out my stuff on the back of the squad car and ask me if it’s mine and it was of course, my shoe size, cell phone, trinkets, provable stuff. Also some stuff that was obviously not mine which I denied. So after a huddle the cops pull the cuffed perp out of the back seat so I can ID him which I do. He goes ballistic and is spitting and kicking at me saying “i’ll kill you if I ever see you again” but the cops quickly block that. Turns out the perp was on parole with a long rap sheet so got another year in jail for a trivial parking lot burglary. Woo-hoo!
An unlikely ending for a parking lot theft but it turns out around here the cops target hot spot crime areas that are burgeoning with roving “high enforcement” teams for a few days here, a few days there to put the fear of God into perps. My incident just happened to be during a high enforcement operation in the area.
Don’t get me wrong but the more cops the better. I’d like to see 10 times more traffic cops on the Interstates and arterials, more neighborhood night patrols and lots more USFS/BLM/National Park LEO active 24/7 to catch perps who think they can ignore the law with impunity.
i’m with you on the traffic cops. Interstates 85/40 between Charlotte and Raleigh, NC, set your cruise on 80 and keep one foot just above the brake pedal. Check the mirror often to move over for those with cruise set at 100.
It’s nuts.
@mathteacher It’s not just traffic cops, there’s gotta be a lot more beat cops working the streets to put the fear into small time muggers they may get caught.

On I-80 in Iowa last weekend, I mostly went 70-75 in the 70 zone and passed about 6 vehicles, with an almost constant stream by me in the left lane, some REALLY fast. On the 55 mph roads I ran 60 and was frequently holding up traffic until a good passing stretch.
It used to be 5 over was all you could reliably get by eith. Doesn’t seem to be the case now.
I think I saw one cop in the 300 mile round trip.
. It’s terrible everywhere. I used I95 to go to Savannah back in the spring. It wasn’t as crowded as I85 locally, but cruise set at 80 barely kept up with what traffic was there.
I40 from Raleigh to Greensboro is 80 mph bumper to bumper, door to door. The truckers are the only sane ones. At the back-ups, get in the lane with them.
All of the cops are bunched up at the wrecks.
My biker friends all tell me that speed is their friend; keep ahead of those who can kill you. Hard to do these days.
This is not to one up a losing discussion….
Routinely, in NM, esp in and around Albuquerque, and in Las Cruces too, people tear by not only at 10 to 15mph(75 and 65 are the majority of the speed limits) over the limits, but well in excess of the triple digit mark.
They create horrendous accidents and the main reason is because the police don’t have staff or time to even consider pursuit. The violent crime is far outweighed to speeding in need of attention, but I suspect they are related somewhere.
Well, the interstate is a bank robber’s friend and proximity to an interstate may increase a branch’s chance of being robbed.
Can’t believe they’re all bank robbers, but you’re probably on to something.
Yep.
I’ve used a few different systems.
At home I use a Ubiquiti dream machine pro to handle my network and security cameras. You just need this and a Hard drive and some POE cameras https://store.ui.com/collections/unifi-network-unifi-os-consoles/products/udm-pro
I’ve also used Synology. This is also great, but after a few cameras they charge you per setup. https://www.synology.com/en-us/support/nvr_selector
If you have an old Mac you can run Security Spy. not the best but its a little more reliable than running windows software as the updates aren’t as intrusive. https://www.bensoftware.com/securityspy/
I’m not a big fan of ring or any of the other companies that host the camera’s on there servers.
