railroad val maps at National Archive
Posted by [email protected] on April 22, 2019 at 5:24 pmI have researched on line. I believe I have identified the records I need. Since I am not able to go in person I am told that I need to hire a researcher. Any help you can offer is welcomed

Number is not in service??? I understand paying for someone to slave over a hot scanner all day. I just do not understand why I need to hire an outside consultant to do it? sheesh….

I used David Pfeiffer last October to get some Railroad maps. He gave a presentation at the NYSAPLS Conference in 2018. He scanned and emailed me the maps, everything went smoothly and he got me what I needed.

If it is an active railroad have you tried going with the railroad? It may seem hi but might be cheaper than the archives.

Not really surprised, although 2013 didn’t seem like all that long ago (to me anyway). Oh Well.

Thank you to all who replied. It is greatly appreciated

I’ve tried unsuccessfullly to obtain RR val maps from BNSF. I was explicitly was told that the BNSF lawyers put a memo out stating to not give out any maps to anyone. I tried to explain that I needed this information to locate a property that is next to their ROW. Was told to use the existing fences. The fences in this area just meandered and didn’t really define the location. Plus there were two sets of RR tracks. She found the location I was working and told me it was 200 ft wide. I asked from the c/l of what? She had no clue and still wouldn’t provide a map. So I explained to her that I would show on the plat that the owner now owns up to the railroad where he felt comfortable. Would 25ft be to close?

I have experienced the same thing when working near a BNSF row. They simply refused to provide any maps. Luckily there was enough private work in the area to resolve it to a level suitable for the project.
