You can tell when surveyors are on vacation. The monument pictures show them with without the safety vest.

The orange hat serves two important purposes beyond basic head protection when traveling:
1. It makes it easy for my wife to locate me in a crowd.
2. When ordering an Uber, entering “orange hat” in the driver notes ensures that he pulls up to the right person.

Reminds me of going to the Surveyors Historical Society meeting. My wife said she had never had so much trouble finding me in a crowd, because the whole room was full of gray-haired guys in plaid shirts. I should have worn something that stood out.
