Organizing Job Files
We’re discussing how to organize our job files electronically. I mentioned adding clickable job numbers to our interactive county GIS map. My boss mentioned an Excel spreadsheet. I mentioned Access. How do you organize your job files? We’re also planning on doing a lot of leveling to replace destroyed benchmarks throughout the county. Any thoughts on organizing a large network of benchmarks?

Sounds like you should sit down with the GIS and Assessor people and see what the basis of the ‘interactive’ map is currently. You probably already have a ready to go solution under that software now. Reinventing the wheel is only fun if you’re independently wealthy, or just like to torment people. 😉

Orange County Florida Property Appraisers Office (https://www.maps.ocpafl.org). You’ll need Internet Explorer with Silverlight to use the map. You can also use Chrome if you have the Silverlight plugin.

That’s a nice website! As backward as Florida can be, we do have a great system for research through the county websites. I’m in Lee county and can’t imagine working without our appraiser’s site and the GIS.
Not sure exactly what your mean about the job numbers… somehow linking your data to the website??
I’ve always liked a system for benchmarks that ties the name of the mark to the book and page of the field work. That simplifies the research from both a field and office standpoint. The crew stamps the disk with the book#-Page#-Mark#.. so the 5th benchmark on sheet 10 of book 3 would be 3-10-5

Thanks for the compliment, Andy! I spoke to one of our GIS analysts about my idea. It’s doable, but would be done on internal GIS mapping software. All of our work is assigned by job numbers. We need someone to improve the mobile version of the OCPA Interactive Map. I could have really used the map to find a CCR number last week. It was painfully slow searching for a CCR through LABINS on my phone.
