There are several Disto models. I am sure you can find one that fits your price/function needs. Correcting the measurement to a vertical distance, value checking and a strong laser are items you need. I have stopped verifying my measurements each time and am confident the value is want I expected. Make sure you can see the dot, through the water, on the bottom of the pipe invert. Shoot several, some at higher places and verify that your readings indicate the same. A mid-range Disto will also shoot through screen, and will shoot through glass if you hold the Disto directly and square against the pane.
And my reply to comments yet to come, “I collect enough improvement measurements to verify my eccentric shots are correct.”
why do you want to be in the center of the manhole LID?
Do you not shoot the center of the actual manhole (which is typically at the edge of a lid)?
Do you shoot both?

and when it gets dropped in the manhole…$100 feels a lot better than $1000

Take indirect height and width measurements using the Pythagorean Theorem. The key is to make sure your second shot — the “rectangular shot” — is perpendicular to the point you are measuring, shown as the 90?ø angle in the images. The best way to ensure accuracy is to use a tripod and an adapter.

@martin_au thanks a million, friend. Ordered mine yesterday. Looking forward to keeping my invert measure down notes nice and neat via the Bluetooth synched Leica Disto App on my iPhone too.
I am very encouraged by the ease of use and quick learning curve getting to know the app even before I have the device. Imagine these two coffee cups are manholes out on site somewhere.
I’m going ring ring that number on the other mug and ask for a price for one corner.
@norman-oklahoma And you don’t have to wipe off the Bosch too often either.
