How do you relax and take your mind away from work?

The husband of one of my cousins did that for many years. He’s paying for it in his old age (72 or so). Knees are shot.
I believe it was six miles every morning before going to work. He was somewhere in his 30’s and living in Sibley, IA, which is only a few miles short of being in Minnesota. It was Winter with ice and snow coating most everything. He was near the middle of his run and it was still dark when a car honked at him. He took a look towards the tooter, turned back straight and a half-second later slammed his head and body into the slim side of a steel sign post. That knocked him out. Someone called the police to say there appeared to be a dead man on the sidewalk at such and such intersection. They arrived shortly after he came to and hauled him to the hospital. Some number of stitches and plenty of pain meds later he caught a ride home.
On May 22, 2021 my wife had an aneurism in her brain stem that burst 10 minutes after we were talking on the phone. I arrived home to find her lifeless on the floor at the age of 39.
Up until that time, I worked overtime every day, including most weekends, in pursuit of professional advancement. On 5/22/02, that all stopped when I saw before my own eyes just how short life could be. After that experience I had the unfortunate experience of seeing two people get killed on construction sites, again, right before my eyes.
After all of the above, I slowed down the race for the golden ring. I got to where I wanted to be professionally, it just took longer.
I will soon be 57 and haven’t really done much for myself. I recently had an opportunity to buy a 32′ Class C RV and went for it. Now that I am comfortable financially and have a well trained staff, I plan of hitting the road and seeing the sites. I’ll be taking my first trip in about a week.
A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work…

One of those where you get to pick where you think the bar should be shot.
@dougie
That sounds like fun. Come down and get me next time. Put in plenty of fuel.
@dougie
Did you film anything besides yourself? ????
Very sorry to hear of the tragedy with your wife. A fellow I’ve known my entire life had just turned 40 when he collapsed at his son’s baseball game. The ball park was about a half mile from the hospital. They did all they could do for him, then shipped him to a specific hospital in Omaha, Nebraska for surgery. It was miraculous that they were able to do what had to be done. That was 34 years ago and he is still working every day. But, if he had been out feeding his hogs or driving to meet with a banking customer of his, he would have died on the spot where he went down. There was absolutely no warning that something was about to happen.

Hey! I know that guy! Lucky you getting to hang out with him. 🙂
Your friendly, virtual neighborhood WebmasterMan, that’s rough. I’m so glad though that you have been able to reach a point where you could invest in yourself.
I totally understand the “race for the golden ring” — I haven’t heard it put that way before, but that says it all. I used to do that too but when I gave up surveying and got established in web development, it occurred to me at one point that I needed to get out of the rat race and just work to keep my family and myself comfortable. It’s so much easier and less stressful when you aren’t constantly competing with others. Just do your thing and enjoy life.
Hope you have fun on your travels! If you find yourself in Oregon, look me up! Perhaps we can meet for lunch, dinner or a drink.

And the cool stuff we saw
I hope everyone has a great day; I know I will!That’s great what Angel is doing, what a sweetheart! I am enjoying hosting @dougie here in AK for awesome Alaska trip. A bit of survey talk (can’t help ourselves) but mostly doing what I like to do: show off Alaska and tout the peace of being retired. Rock on.
Good times. Destiny provides for good karma. Tomorrow we haul big halibut into our boat and packaged to go home with. Not my first rodeo to host visitors.
@dougie
Nice, wow was it strictly a fly fishing trip? I??ve never fished a running fresh water river/stream before, (too busy looking for high water mark). I feel relaxed just lookin?? at the pictures. ????
