Help! my garmin "soiled the bed"

It’s a car GPS Garmin Nuvi 255w, I haven’t turned it on for two months, but I charged it up today on a visit to “Bass Pro” (awesome) and it’s stuck on “loading maps” for the last six hours, any suggestions? I already tried the “soft boot” and there is no hard boot on this one, TIA

You should try Googleing your problem. Here’s one solution you might try:

Two things to try:1. A firmware update
2. A master reset. here are instructions copied from garmin.com:
Note: A master reset will erase all waypoints or favorites and will restore your unit to the default factory settings.
Start with the unit OFF and unplugged from power
Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil
Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the unit ON
Release the power button when the device powers ON
You will see a new message: Do you really want to erase all user data?
Remove your finger from the touchscreen when this message displays
Touch Yes
The device will automatically reset. Please follow the on screen prompts on the nüvi and when completed place your device in an area with a clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites. -
Dont get me wrong, I did google it, when I get to the point where it says “Do you really want to erase all user data?” and the yes/ no buttons are there it does nothing, pressing either

My apologies for being a little “short” about Googleing. On the other board we’d get so many people asking questions like this that I got tired of it and gained a reputation for telling everyone to “google it”. It is, however, good advice which you had already done.
I did see quite a few references to the problem so there may be more things to try. The one I suggested I pulled out in just a couple of minutes. I did see other comments that it may need to go back to Garmin. I’d get on their website and send tech support an email.

I didn’ consider your comment “short” i’ve often said the same thing, appreciate your help, but still not solved.

After numerous attempts I finally got to answer “yes” then it rebooted and now there is a scroll bar on the ” acquiring maps” don’t know if this is done yet but thanks for the help you guys

you can always employ the “4lb hammer reboot”
smash-piece fly everywhere.
the reboot part is when you go buy a new one 😉
