I’ve heard Eric several times and he was a lunch speaker at the ESRI conference this year. I think he has most of it right. Especially the part about most Surveyors run into the small town GIS person who is not really a GISP Professional.
Just a glorified tax map tech who now has digital mapping capabilities. Not even close to those in some of the more urban areas. I doubt that you would have any qualms with MLB or me when trying to get a plat approved.
I agree with Eric in that the majority of Surveyors have no credentials, background, education or experience to be in charge of a GIS. There are just to many things in a GIS that are not related to boundary knowledge. But he, like me, believe that we can play a huge role in GIS and be a partner to many others.
One thing he said though needs to be cleared up. The Surveying and Engineering Summit had about 400 attendees this year. The Summit starts two days before the ESRI User Conference, in which nearly 15,000 attended.
Everyone of the GIS Professionals that I talked to during the conference was working on ways to get Surveyors more involved, but as a partner and not someone who thought they should be the only one in charge.

My wife has a GIS course this coming semester, so I am sure I will add to my limited knowledge on GIS systems.
All in all, it is what it is, you can’t stop progress. -
I see a ‘mobile mapper” gps unit in someone’s future.

I have access to both AutoCAD Map and ArcGIS and find the AutoCAD Map for the GIS chores that I do without any loss to accuracy in a familiar environment.
