When the Surveyors Historical Society met in Philadelphia a few years ago the program was largely about Mason and Dixon and their work. The closing ceremony was dedication of a stone and plaque to mark Mason’s grave, which previously had no marker.
They had someone perform that song as part of the program.
The stone was a M&D line stone that had been displaced and thrown in a ditch, found by surveyors, and repurposed in the cemetery.

I want to ask the technician level people here what they really look for in an employment situation. ‘Mo money, of course. But beyond that? What floats your boat? What makes a situation really attractive to you?
A boss that I can respect and coworkers I get along with. I have that where I work and wouldn’t consider going anywhere else.
one of the lowest paying but best jobs I ever had early in my career – the owner would come out to the site with a bush axe and cut line while we took a break. He didn??t have much to give us in terms of money, but he treated us respect. If we needed an extra guy on a big job he would take over as party chief and out work all of us all day long. Come to think of it – he was about the age I am now.

@norman-oklahoma Those all play a role, definitely, but for me, just like money, it??s going to be comparable at any reputable firm. Good 401k match with quality investment options, good vacation time, and good pay are definitely important, but in my opinion those are just mandatory. After those, my most important question is ??who will I be working with??
I had an interview at a great local company a couple years back. I had an interview with one of the principals, hit it off well, the benefits and everything were top notch. The week after, they want to do a follow-up interview and include their chief of surveys. I get in the room, and the surveyor is pouting like a little kid being punished. He can??t even fake an ounce of politeness. The principal once again does 99% of the talking, his chief of surveys mainly sticks to the sulking. By the end of the week, they email me with a generous salary offer and I had to turn them down. I was really excited to go and work for them, but after I met that guy I knew that would have been in for some looong weeks
