ding ding! Astute observation. And a little humorous…
These are photos Kent sent me the other day from one of his projects in residential Austin. Although I don’t believe the work is complete, Kent’s correspondence centered on the criteria I presented here. I don’t know if he has elevated the dignity of the older rebar to “plat original” status although I think he implied as much.
I just thought it would be interesting to see other opinions without an extraneous ‘McMillimeter’ factor. I myself might be tempted to consider the “older” rebar as exactly that…older. But I would need additional corroborative evidence before I held it as a corner original to the platting.
I was just seeing if a Kent flavored post would draw a different reaction if it was generically wrapped.
Your use of in situ was the giveaway
Exactly. He was the first one I thought of when you started this thread.
When first reading the original post several days ago, I did go back to see if it was posted by Kent. Glad I’m not the only one that thought that….
Jeff D.And the use of “deformed”. I’ve never called them anything but rebar – nor has anybody else in my work experience.
Jeff D.It was posted by Kent on his Facebook page about a week ago. I have not seen his final resolve, but he may have posted it.
Prior to deformed rebar it would have been twisted square bar stock. I have seen it on a few old demolition projects, but have never seen it as a survey marker.

No doubt whatever he comes up it will involve rejection.
No doubt about it.
Just to split hairs the term deformed has specific connotations. Not that any of us that use them for corners would be familiar with. Check out ASTM A305-47T.
