Daycare survey
Posted by just-a-surveyor on July 9, 2019 at 7:20 pmHow do you do a job on a day care?
Do you budget it to do on the weekend or after hours when the ankle biting heathens are not present?
I am not at all comfortable working around a bunch of rug rats.

Typically they have outdoor time and indoor time. Typically they only play outside within a fence. During the main part of the day the parking area is relatively empty. Alternatively budget in a field trip to the zoo for all, if the zoo will accept them.

I’ve only done a daycare job once, a boundary and topo. We just dove right in and did the work with little kids running all around us. Their adult minders mostly kept them from interfering, and the job went pretty smoothly.

I have done topos at may school situations, and I would not worry about the kids as much as the mothers coming to pick them up. Think of a bear separated from her cubs. Your instrument, cones or no cones, or even you standing there in a vest with a rod, are not going to deter her from getting to her precious little one. Find out when pick up happens and be sure to be elsewhere that time.

LOL. I’d say it’s a bit more simpler than that – there are invisible lines of least effort that Joe and Joan Public use for their dailies, and if you’re on one of those lines, you’re gonna get smoked.

One of my favorite surveying memories came while doing a topo in an elementary school playground.
The kids were running around the instrument very curious during recess and the teacher seized the moment to let them know that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were surveyors.
I added that Abraham Lincoln was a surveyor too.
One little boy looked up to me with a curious look on his face…He asked… ?? Are you the President??

I really had high hopes that this thread was gonna be more fun. Come back and tell us stories once the job is done.

I’m laser scanning several YMCA’s in the area. Inside and out. Summer camps are in full swing. They are giving me a 3 hour window on field trip days to get what I can get done on the interior. I knocked the first one out in parts of two days. It went rather well actually. The ladies’ locker room took a little more coordination to get through.

I was asked to survey a school for the deaf once and they required that we have certification (our State Patrol does this) that we were not sex offenders. Odd but I had such credentials as it also was a requirement as a hockey referee. That job morphed into several other private school surveys where I’ve taken the opportunity to engage teachers and students alike. We’ve set up mini tripods with old equipment for kids to look through and taught them how to read a tape measure and sharpen a machete.
If you don’t want to be around kids there are options, especially this time of year. Parents, I can’t help you with they are hopeless.

Agreed, parents are the biggest hazard, followed closely by the teachers.
We’ve tried to educate the local architects to plan in advance (some hope) and commission the surveys during holidays. With little kids it’s almost impossible to work safely when they are running around and most schools seem incapable of herding them.
For older children, one solution which works quite well is to arrange to give the final year a “careers” talk for an hour or so, when they can see how different subjects can fit into surveying and also get a chance to look through instruments. Then when you actually get on with the survey you have already recruited a large cohort of “protectors” who keep the younger children well out of your way. We have actually managed internal building surveys this way when time constraints required – although one word of warning – PLAN WORK SO NOTHING IS SET UP IN CORRIDORS AT CHANGE OF LESSON TIMES – or you get trampled!

Try lifting drain covers when the kids are around. Be sure to let them see what floats past.

You can tell them that they are seeing the elusive endangered brown darter fish. ????

While set up one day outside a fancy restaurant five young girls came out who obviously had ti many martoonies.
One said, “Take our picture!” I said, “Okay, take off your tops!”
You’ve never heard such giggling.
