Cliff Stoll was asked to investigate a $0.75 discrepancy in mainframe billing at Lawrence-Berkeley National Lab. He ended up discovering a German hacker who was hacking into military and US government sites and selling the information to the KGB. Documented in his book, Cuckoo’s Egg and in a Nova episode, “The KGB, the Computer, and Me”.

had an annual job review back in ’06 or ’07 that was a damn near verbatim re-creation of that scene. one of the most surreal experiences of my life, still.
even better part is the guy who gave me that review way back when is now sitting in my old chair at the company i started subsequent to that job.
