Converting .CR5 files
Posted by briarcutter on January 14, 2020 at 4:12 pmI recently inherited a surveyors files, he used TDS software. I would like to convert these .CR5 files into a .TXT format.
I’ve browsed around and found that Gray Technical offers a conversion program.
Have any of you used software (more particular, this program) from them or any other vendor ?
Your help/advise is appreciated
Thanks … Paul

I don’t know what software you use, Carlson Survey can import a CR5 file to its CRD format. The CRD can be exported to a TXT format.
Traverse PC can also import a CR5 file.
PLS NJ & NY, PP NJIf you have Civil 3D, I think that the Survey Link tool will convert CR5 files:
“…people will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think.” -Neil PostmanIf I remember correctly, I used to use an old DOS program called Kermit. I’m not sure where you can get a copy anymore or if you could even run it on a computer anymore.
Hope this helps.
I’d venture a guess that having a Foresight dongle so you could open TDS .job files and .pro drawings would be helpful. It’s now Spectra Precision Foresight, but works just as well on TDS files since nobody has bothered to upgrade the software since the 90’s. They’re difficult to find but I ran across someone who had several dongles they were willing to part with at a very reasonable price and I picked up a couple. He may well still have another and if shoot me a message I’ll see if I can’t track down his contact info.
WillySince SMI and TDS had the same original source, SMI is caoable of converting a TDS raw file to txt or asc format.
Kermit was an old slow program to download the HP 48 among other early data collectors. TDS and SMI eventually developed faster download program.
Carlson Survey can dowload and convert almost all the old data collectors from within an CAD drawing munu.
I would assume you inherited more than just the CR5 files, if the points are within an AutoCAD drawing Carlson Survey can read the points and create a variety of coordinate formats. If they are Simplicity or Generic CAD drawings your task is a little harder.

Smi Transfer and Carlson X Port will do the job.
Sometimes it is simple enough to change the file extension to a .txt
Civil 3d.
Create ground data
Data collection
Convert
Pick cr5 in and txt out.
