Closure Reports
I had never had to do a Closure Report before for anyone. I figured it would be easy in C3D. Well, once I figured out how to do it, it wasn’t too bad, except I could never get it to do it the way I wanted it. Either the direction or the starting point, no doubt there is a way.
I finally sent them off and we had a discussion about them. It could be that we never do another one, so we decided to leave well enough alone and not set-up a format for them until the next request, hopefully I will be retired by then.
What’s that old saying? “There’s 3 hours of my life I’m never getting back”.

We have to prepare them all the time, from subdivision boundaries to easement boundaries. They’re easy once you get the line labeling down. The most time consuming part is formatting the output into something half decent looking.

I hear you! Most of my time getting it to work was the formatting. I never did quite get the report to follow my descriptions the way I wanted. I figure if I ever do it again (unlikely) I will use my description writer instead of C3D. That way I can create a format for closure reports and run the report after the description and have two files, one for the legal and one for the closure report. I should be able to do it by playing with the elements in the description writer. Basically I went down the wrong path trying to learn a new task in C3D instead of using a program I’m very familiar with.

There are a two different ways to create closure reports in the out of the box version of C3D: Parcels and MapCheck
Parcels are the simplest as you can use the export analysis tools from the parcels menu and export any number of parcels to a single report with a few clicks.
Mapcheck is probably the most useful as it offers the surveyor more interaction with the data, specifically starting point and direction. Start the mapcheck, name it, click the starting point and then start selecting the pertinent C3D labels(which offer the option to ‘reverse’ the direction during the process”). You will see the mapcheck lines being drawn with arrows as you are selecting each label. Once your at the end switch to output view in the mapcheck options and then copy the results to the clipboard and paste into whatever program you want.
We often paste the results in C3d right next to the geometry. We find the mapcheck more functional but parcels have their place as well.

I started with the Mapcheck function and finally ended up using the parcel menu. It works better IMO simply for ease of use. Formatting the output gave me some headaches, I finally gave up and sent it off as is. I figure my legal writer will be more easily put to use for this task if I ever need it again. I doubt I will, but maybe I will start sending it to the locals who have never requested one and make their life a bit easier. Probably take 1/2 hour or so to set-up a format that will look nice in the description writer, strip out all the thences, alongs, ect. Maybe insert a list of courses and the closure with acreage at the end.
