I just keep an extra chain on hand, they are fairly cheap.

It’s sad how few people know how to sharpen steel. My grandfather taught me the art. Once learned, you can apply it to any cutting tool.
Dad, Grandpa, and Great Grandpa were all loggers. We sharpened chains differently for hardwood and soft. A little bit more aggressive for the latter, a little less for the former. If the saw didn’t pull you into the cut, it wasn’t sharp.
I abhor the waste from people unwilling to maintain equipment. A little bit of cleaning and extra attention to moving parts and most small engines will last decades.

I’ve found that the younger kids overcomplicate sharpening. I remedy it by giving them the time to practice. In the beginning I will have them take a marker and blacken the cutting edge so they can see how the bastard file strips metal. Once they can operate a file correctly (evenly), I teach them to think about it like polishing something until it’s shiny. Stropping never hurt anything either.

Anybody ever try to survey for this guy? 😉
I bet he’s single and can’t keep dogs from runnin’ off… 😉

There is a guy whose shop was along my previous commute who did a great job on chainsaw chains. You drop them in a lock box with payment enclosed and you can pick them up a week later. The price is $1.00 per chain. I don’t need to learn how to do it given his pricing and the quality of his work.

That pricing should give you an idea of just how easy and quick it is to do. To me it is inconceivable to own and/or run a chain saw without knowing how to sharpen it, and otherwise maintain it . If the operator can’t do that, can he be trusted to operate it safely?

And if, every time you accidentally touch the running chain to the ground, or saw through some barbed wire you can stop work, drive your chain to the drop off point, and wait a week – then by all means pay the dollar. Or work with a dull saw the rest of the day. Or spend 5 minutes with a file. Your choice.
