Advice from someone smarter than me.
Weighing between a 2? or 5? TS for basic survey work. 50?? x 100?? lots up to 100 acres. Will I see an appreciable difference between the two?

They both came across the same assembly line and the 2″ model passed inspection and the 5″ was that much off.
Either will do what you want for small parcels.
I have a 5″ and 3″ Sokkia Set x30R and both are set to record to 1″ angular and I get similar results.
The 3″ model is the outright better TS and cost considerably more.

That’s all I do. All my guns are 7″ and even that is overkill. Double your angles and shoot the distance twice at each TP and a 7″ gun would be fine for a 100 ac. parcel. ????

After 24 years of conducting field work I can say IMO, measuring direct and reverse is 100x more important than anything as long as the instrument is better than say 5″. They are never in perfect calibration, you and you’re gear as well as procedures are not perfect either. So don’t sweat nonsense, average distances both for FS and BS and do at least one or two good sets of D&R. The results will speak for themselves. Or you can do as a bunch do, hide behind “statistics” from the manufacturer and have totally lousy procedures. Laugh… We all see it.

The missing question is, are you talking 5 second least count or 5 second DIN? Not even close to the same thing…

A 2? instrument usually has more sensors.
For most work a 5? instrument is sufficient with good procedures and adjusted equipment such as pole bubbles and tribrachs.
