I have NOW decided to post A REFLECTION and RESPOND later to a post on Solo business by NSTEYB under that thread.
Wendell if this topic is in the wrong thread then please please move ….
Well having recently renewed my annual surveying license for the last time and just announced my forthcoming retirement to then be hit with a health burden from now until the day I peg it I actually started out to respond to a post headed Solo business by NSTEYB.
On reflection????.Will be knocking on half a century from graduation, then started my own surveying practise in 1978. I quickly add before many here today were even a twinkle in their parent’s eye.
Initially the main measuring equipment consisting of a then East German manufactured Zeiss Theodolite, with a 100 metre and 300 foot invar bands until purchasing a theodolite mounted (That I still have).
Then around 1990 purchasing the then Liscad DOS Modules for their surveying calculation and drafting packages, quickly followed with the purchase of a Leica total station. Both both revolutionary cutting edge technology of the day.
To be followed up around 1998 by the purchase of the Leica robotic total station that then enabled me to become a truly solo surveyor At about that time reaching out to a lively and then unique surveying chat board called POB , well before Mr FB emerged. The online POB being the fore runner for this great surveying chat/forum run by Wendell. I must confess that I shudder to know the hours that over the years have spent reading and writing posts and responses to the sites.
One thing I do know is that I quickly found that time differences and distance were not a barrier and as consequence found myself to have personally met more surveyors communicating on the chat boards and formed lifelong friendships than any US surveyor as I attended a number of conferences . I will now very sadly no longer have the opportunity ever to meet most again in person. Unless they sneak a trip DU to SOZ. I am proud to know that on reading the site today that so many are still surveying and spending countless hours sharing and learning. There will be no names mentioned, except my my sign of RADU ( derived from me becoming lazy signing off posts in those good old days with ????
Today I always know a Chat board surveyor when I receive an in person greeting with their interpretive pronouncement of RADU or they post here or on FB with that familiar reference to RADU.
To those who shared a post, had a beer, a coffee or two, dined, shared time in the field, hosted my accommodation or partied on . All graciously and willing to share our common surveying bond. Yes you ALL will vividly recollect that personal time we spent and shared. Chewing the fat and creating memories forever deeply etched within our brain for keeps.
Thank you to all I know for making my surveying career chockers full of fantastic unique memories that are now solidly cast in stone.
I now sit awaiting a communique to saying that you are finally on your way DU to stay and savour the hospitality at RADU??s retreat ( Just 45 minutes south of the birth city of our Torrens title system)
PS…… best come soon, before PD stops me driving, as I do not want to be driven around SOZ by a LH driver trying to drive a RH vehicle in SOZ!
