I read this letter from J. W. Powell, Director USGS to Samuel B. Ward, President New York State Survey in the 1980s.
And one word has rattled around in my brain since.

I used "ultimo" in a memo once and I got forty replies asking, "what?"

I see it (ultimo) in GLO Letters from the 19th Century from time to time, but I suspect that it's considered "archaic" these days.

I love typographical errors. The simpler, the better. The simple ones are the most difficult to catch. I think it was so nice of Mr. Powell to send a letter to Mr. Ward despite the fact that it must have arrived a century too early based on your message to us.

My recent laugh involving a typo occurred as part of my role as a member of the local school board. During our meeting last week we needed to officially approve the hiring of numerous staff members for the upcoming school year. The lengthy list included several bus drivers and one bud driver. That fellow is a good buddy of mine. I saw him at the local convenience store one day so inquired as to precisely what type of "buds" he would be transporting.

"Viz." is one that is almost never used any more but I recall seeing it in a catalog about 40 years ago.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viz .

has a detailed description of its usage.

I had to look it up. I don't recall ever seeing "ultimo" before.

What about that "prosecution of the topographic survey"

Never knew a topo could be illegal.

:p

I Googled ultimo and clicked on images; I think it's another word for "Lingerie"...

The local rural water supply sent out a letter of the new rates last week. This is the same water supply that has received a lot of criticism for mismanagement in the last 6 months. Maybe it's because they can't do the math.
