We have a number of different models of hardware running Carlson SurvCE, and lately our Windows 7 Professional workstations have been giving us fits about connecting to them. The difficulties have been cropping up whether trying to use Windows Mobile Device Center to transfer files using the computer & device operating systems, and when using Carlson Transfer from within the program. We have had problems using both the serial cable on the older units, and the USB cable. Because this is cropping up with three or more different data collectors, and 4 different (but nearly identical) Windows 7 computers, I suspect that one or more of the Windows Updates has messed something up. I'm curious to hear if others have had this problem, and ideas on possible solutions. One fix that worked with an Allegro MX was to do a reset before plugging in the USB cable. After the reset, the unit was able to transfer files using Windows Mobile Device Center. I had a crew in this morning with what I think was a Carlson Explorer (not sure, they are on loan from another office), and before trying a reset, I used a thumb drive to make the transfer.

I got a couple of $100 Dell SFF new XPs from EBay to handle all my data and raw data communication transfer ans storage of data from collectors to avoid the update traps.
They are on a wireless lan that does not connect to the internet and never fail.
They are half the size of a briefcase and can be connected to a monitor of their own or share one hooked up to your upgraded Windows 7, 8 or 10.
