There were a couple of things in the news this weekend that caught my eye.?ÿ The first was a report for a USGS gauging station on the Mississippi about 20 miles south of NOLA.?ÿ The station actually reported the river flow reversed for a period of time...no doubt due to the storm surge from Ida.?ÿ This doesn't happen very often.

I guess the reason it stuck in my mind was because of something my grandfather used to say,?ÿ "When the Mississippi runs backerds!".?ÿ This was usually spoken in the context of "not even once in a blue moon".?ÿ Pappy was almost right.

The other thing I noticed was that Ed Asner passed away.?ÿ I've always enjoyed his work as a character actor.?ÿ But his role that was my favorite was his voice as Carl Fredricksen, the retired balloon salesman in the movie "Up".

Sail high, Ed.

I saw that as well.?ÿ Looks like it's a pretty rare event, happening also during Hurricane Isaac in 2012 and Katrina in 2005.?ÿ It'd be pretty interesting to see those flow gauges going negative!

One of my favorite forums on Facebook is called Kansas History Geeks.?ÿ A picture was added yesterday showing a 15 year-old Ed Asner with his father at the family owned auto salvage business in Kansas City, Kansas, Ed's hometown.?ÿ His brother, Labe, continued the business after their father died.?ÿ I believe it is still family-owned and operated since about 1903.
