You may hear of the Azores from time to time in world news stories.?ÿ What are they, where are they, why do they matter??ÿ Those are questions I had never asked myself until today.

Between Wikipedia and Google Earth, I now know far more than I probably ever needed to know.?ÿ One thing for sure, they have very dull weather.?ÿ It is never below 37 F or higher than 86 F there.?ÿ Normal daily temperature are in the 60s and 70s.?ÿ The islands range in size from 7 square miles up to about 300 square miles.?ÿ Along the archipelago there are a total of nine islands plus some islets, which must really be small if 7 square miles is considered an island.?ÿ They are an autonomous region of Portugal.?ÿ They stretch roughly 370 miles from northwest to southeast.?ÿ Being about 1200 miles from Newfoundland and 800 miles from Portugal, they are near the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

Any young kid who gets mad at his parents and wants to run away from home wouldn't get very far on Corvo, the smallest island.

Being a "wanna-be-recluse" most of my life I was always fascinated by the Hebrides.?ÿ Being a lighthouse keeper on some godforsaken little rock in the North Sea has a sort of mystic allure to me.

@paden-cash?ÿ

Found just what you are looking for.?ÿ Check out Kallur Lighthouse in the Faroe Islands.

Skip the Hebrides.?ÿ One of them is labeled Isle of Muck.?ÿ Another is labeled Rum, though.

Part of my family came from the Isle of Eigg which is a stones throw from Rum.?ÿ I got within sight of it on my honeymoon from the Isle of Skye which is its own beauty all together.?ÿ We visited a castle on Skye that had a family beef with a family from Eigg.?ÿ They talked about it on the tour and sure enough that was my grandmother's family that they were talking about.?ÿ I plan to spend lots of retirement time in that area and on the islands nearby.
