I got to spend the day in Microsoft purgatory. I installed some routine updates to XP last night just before shutting down, but when I booted up this morning my computer didn't know who I was. It recognized the username and password, but all of my settings were gone.
I didn't bother with a system restore -- I wanted the security updates -- so I laboriously reconfigured everything. It sure put a dent in productivity...
You're Welcome, Jim
Melinda and I appreciate your business.
Bill
Yep, got caught in update hell as well on both laptops. I didn't connect the survey laptop online until I finished what I was preparing, but had to wait on the document laptop to finish rebooting twice before everything was running again.

It looks like my situation is a little more troubling than it initially appeared. I login under my usual username and password, but I discovered that Windows is actually logging me into a new profile (named TEMP.ComputerName.002), and that's why my settings disappeared. Not sure why all this happened, but now I'm concerned about the integrity of the file system.
This XP machine is almost 5 years old, so I guess it's time to bite the bullet and get a new one with Windows 7. I cower at the prospect of installing all the software -- especially the older stuff that's not compiled with W7 in mind -- and configuring everything yet again, but better to do it now than after a catastrophic disk failure.
It looks like Bill (and Melinda) win again...
Jim feel free to contact me directly
My XP machine crashed a couple weeks ago and now I am back up and running in Win7Pro with both some new And some critical old programs. For all you and other beer leggers have done for me over the years I will be glad to walk you through the process of upgrading.
My 7 year old HP that died has been replaced with a Dell XPS 8300 i7 core blah blah blah.
I added a 24" monitor and kept the old 15" so now have two.
The Dell and monitor together cost $1800.
I also took this as an opportunity to get Carlson Survey for $1500 (loving it)
It is running inside my old acad2007 just fine.
I also run my 2001 Quickbooks Pro inside a virtual XP machine just fine too.
