Tablet Recomendation for 10 year old nephew

It is a long story, but my 10 year old nephew is living with us for the foreseeable future. He is a special needs child to some degree. He suffers from ADD, ADHD, ODD, and has a very short attention span, and needs almost constant stimulation.

He was at a bowling tournament today with my wife today, and he was very good. He was occupied with a friends Ipad, and the my wife's Nook Color. He was playing games and watching Netflix.

After seeing how this helped keep him occupied and stimulated today, my wife and I are considering getting him a tablet. My wife, two daughters, and I all have Nook Colors, and are pleased with them.

For reasons I would rather not discuss, we are hesitant to spend too much on a tablet for him. Does anyone have any recommendations for a inexpensive tablet that would allow him to play educational games, and watch netflix?

Thanks in advance.

Jimmy

Jimmy,

I bought a 7 inch android tablet branded "Hisense" a couple of months ago for $85.

I bought it at Walmart.

It has most everything that an expensive one has and would be perfect for what you are looking for.

The battery life is not bad and the screen is actually very brilliant.

I do watch netflix on it, get to Google Play and it seems to have found a home on the lamp table next to my easy chair.

Clark Howard said something about getting tablets for kids just the other day. I don't recall exactly what he said except for kids over 7 or so should get the "real deal". Check out his site at clarkhoward.com or give a call during his show hours and see what they say.

Hey Jimmy,

I have just "retired" my trusty Nook Color. I would be happy for your nephew have it, free of course. It works fine. However if you want a new tablet nothing beats a Hisense Sero 7 for the money. $129 at Walmart. Let me know! 🙂

Thank you for the replies guys. My wife and I read the replies, and thank all of you very much. I forgot to mention that he is bipolar as well.

FL/GA, PLS, I sent you an email through Beerleg.

I appreciate the friends that I have from this Forum. Thank you Wendell and Angel.

Hi Jimmy,

It is my pleasure to send this to your nephew. The fact that he will use it is payment enough! I'm looking for the box it came in but if I can't find it I'll pack it securely. I'll mail it to the address you provided Monday morning.

Y'all are good people. 🙂

ps: sent you an email

You can crack a nook color to make it an android also.
You can buy a program for about $20 to do it.

I did it for our son's nook so he could access android based games etc.

You can either boot up as a
Nook or as an android tablet .

Popular game for kids his age around here is Minecraft. But you can't play it on the Nook platform. There is an android tablet edition.

+1
Minecraft was my first thought when I read the OP. I call it Lego's for the computer. My kids have it on their Ipods. Just got home from a 4 hour trip each way to Grandma's house and it was the quietest trip ever! Even better then with Walt Disney on the TV we have in the van.
