Anyone ever been there? How about the bay area?

Yes, I've been there a lot and Bryan Taylor lives near Sunnyvale. My daughter lives in Belmont just up the peninsula a little bit.

Marin County is the best part.

You can see the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Marin County Civic Center, one of his last projects.

There is the Marin Headlands, Mount Tamalpais and one of my favorite activities is to walk the Golden Gate Bridge.

Years ago, I attended training classes at Trimble's headquarters and Charlie Trimble would join us for lunch break. Ashtech used to be there also.

Thank you John and Dave!

I currently am living in the Seattle area and have an opportunity that if offered I might not be able to turn down. I have noticed the cost of living is incredibly high and must be taken into consideration. I think a salary of at least 80k is necessary to be a worthwhile option...

I know there are cons but at this moment I need a reliable paycheck and benefits...

Thank you for helping me bounce these thoughts around...

Good luck to you, Kelly. I hope things work out for you.
Keep in mind that Sunnyvale is essentially San Jose. That's not necessarily a bad thing, it just means you'll be in a rather large urban area.
It's cool, though. Silicon Valley is an exciting place.

Thank you Don!

Yeah I imagine it would be a pretty bustling area, for now it could be fun.. What would you say a union Land Surveyor in the area would expect to make? Thanks!

Kelly,
Others can answer that question better than I can; I haven't lived there in a really looong time, although I visit frequently. I would assume a union job in such an area will pay pretty well. I’m happy you’re a union man, it makes an old lefty happy 🙂

I would hope that you're not just looking at Sunnyvale for housing etc. because that area can be pretty pricey. There are cheaper areas that require commuting. Some people live as far as away as Livermore or further. Modesto, even, but that seems a little nutty. My son lives in Campbell and commutes to Palo Alto.

People do it when they have to 🙂

Again, good luck,

Don

Union chainman hourly rate is $31.22, plus $11.58 medical, $8.72 retirement, $3.32 vacation, and $0.88 miscellaneous. Party chief is $37.19 plus the same benefit amounts. If you don't count the benefits, you'll need some overtime in order to hit $80k, and that's if you work full-time year-round.

Due to the high wages, it's not uncommon -- at least not when I last worked at a union shop in the early '80s -- for field crews to get laid off whenever work slows down, which it pretty much does on an annual basis due to weather.

Oh.. and at least when I asked them I was told that lay-offs are not likely. I explained I am not interested in a position without stability. They have a staff with plenty of longevity. Apparently they are filling a position that unexpectedly opened recently...

🙂

It is common for single people to share houses. My Daughter lives in a house where every bedroom, the dining room and living room are rented out. The kitchen, hallway, laundry and one bathroom are shared spaces.

The Silicon Valley is one of the bright spots in the California economy. A lot of home improvement contractors are very busy either upgrading the existing house or bulldozing it and building a new one.

After further review it appears that salary should be in the range of 90k for the area and market...

I sure hope this is the opportunity I have been seeking! Maybe hard work does pay off...:-)

Just check out the housing prices there before you commit.

At $80 or $90k per year you and your family will be at the lower end of the earning level locally.
