Still putting off War and Peace, but stumbled onto Stryon's Sophie's Choice just recently.
Man, I once entertained thoughts of being a writer.
I realize now that I'm barely qualified to be a reader.
Actually, I knew that years ago:-(

I see you haven't been back to the writers' forum for two years. If you think you want to write, just do it. That forum is a worthwhile place to interact with writers. I haven't been active on it, but do continue with the local group.
Greatly absorbed in “Go down Together”. Never realized Texas was so sophisticated (Dallas) back in the day. Excellent so far, love Guinns style. Thanks for the tip!
I am aware of a high school English teacher attempting to use Sophie's Choice with his Sophomore class. I say attempted because the students and their parents protested quite loudly, including five out of seven school board members. They didn't burn the book, just took it out of circulation you might say.
I haven't read it. From the wikipedia summary, I would think it might be a bit too strong in several ways to be required reading for sophomores. I certainly wouldn't object to having it in a high school library, however.
