I'll bet he is one of those who hears a song one time and goes off and plays it.

I knew a kid, Keith, in Jr. high 8th grade who was severely mentally retarded. The band room was next door to my homeroom that year and they often practiced stage-band early in the mornings. One morning someone was absolutely wearing the drums out - about like this kid.
A bunch of us eased over to investigate and sure enough, there was Keith with a big ear-to-ear grin just killing it - solo.
That was the only time I heard him play.
