Here is a very neat, compact, simple tool, recently invented, that allows a standard rope hitch knot to be used on a single line.
It adds friction on the rope to take some of the weight of the climber off the hitch knot, so that it will release and allow descent without changing gear from ascent to descent, which can be rather important as this video demonstrates.
