WASHINGTON — Lazily falling from space, the 12,500-pound satellite appeared late Friday to be headed toward an overnight, debris-spewing return to Earth, with the U.S. one of many potential crash sites.
With a handful of hours to go in its 20-year life, the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite remained exceedingly unpredictable. Tumbling completely beyond the control of NASA, the satellite was expected to shower 26 pieces of space junk across a 500-mile linear crash zone.
NASA said Friday night that it expected the satellite to come crashing down between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. CDT. It was going to be passing over the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans at that time, as well as Canada, Africa and Australia.
The United States wasn't entirely out of the woods; the possible strike zone skirted Washington state.
"There is a low probability any debris that survives re-entry will land in the United States, but the possibility cannot be discounted because of this changing rate of descent," NASA said. "The risk to public safety is very remote."
Where's she at now?

Dang! You think they could have brought it down in the desert or someting and then some lucky surveyors would have gotten the contract to survey the debris.
Ocean, ha! Bad goverment planning.

Having been one of the few who's actually mapped space debris (there are a few others on this board) it ain't what it's cracked up to be, at all.
I mapped shuttle debris for weeks. Every single spec. It fell for hours. I'd collected 200 points and it was still falling when I was behind the prison walls during lockdown.
Someone else can do it next time. Jeff Opperman wrote a diary of his experience and it was published in the Texas surveyor magazine.

I didn't mean to make light of crash surveys. They are serious business related to tragedies. Worked on one in Maintoba many years ago. Miserable conditions and we had go over the same land many times. I'll look for the write-up you mentioned, thnx.

No problem.
