and he didn't complain at all like I thought he would.

Seriously, I was in Lexington, Kentucky last week. Went for a drive around the countryside on Tuesday afternoon. Near the south side of the city on Route 169 we saw a sign warning "No bridge 9.7 miles ahead". So, of course, we had to go see why there was no bridge. Upon arrival we discovered the Valley View Ferry crossing the Kentucky River. It has been in continuous operation since 1785 making it the oldest continuous business in Kentucky. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valley_View_Ferry
Caltrans operates the Ryer Island Ferry on Route 84 in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. I'm pretty sure it's free. They operate it in lieu of a draw bridge.
Yup. Free. Short ride. Less than 100 yards.
we were away on a man trip one weekend with 5 surveyors piled in an expedition heading out to the coast of nc to do some fishing. it was about a 6 hour trip so things got pretty silly. one of the guys was local to the area we were heading to and kept telling us we had to hurry if we wanted to catch the last ferry of the night. every 30 minutes or so he would bring it up that if we didn't hurry we were not going to catch the ferry. finally after about 5 times somebody piped up and said 'cooper, dude are you gay? all you have been talking about this whole trip is how bad you want to ride a fairy.' it was so corny but it was gold. we ragged ol coop for years about 'riding fairies'. good times.
Took the newer ferry from Muskegon, MI to Milwaukee, WI a few yrs back. It's about 80 miles across Lake Michigan. Even had a bar & sandwich shop. I think it was under 3 hrs total, and beat the heck out of driving around through Chicago. Forgot the cost, but was still a tad cheaper. I even had a kayak strapped to the roof of my truck & they didn't care.
It only holds three cars
It was enlarged in recent years so that it could haul three cars at once instead of only two.
It's nothing like the monster ferries I've ridden near Galveston and other places.
