Morrison's father was an admiral, if that's who you meant. I read where, ironically, the estate of the iconoclastic rebel Jim Morrison is controlled by a naval officer (his dad) and a high school principal (his late widow's dad).

Yes, he was an Admiral aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Nimitz. There's a couple of pics of Jim and his dad aboard that ship back in 1961 I believe.

If you buy the latest documentary, "When You're Strange", which was assembled with only original footage of the Doors, there's a bonus interview with his sister and another with his dad, who past away just last year. It also uses footage of a film that Jim made/produced/starred in called "HWY". It was shot using 35mm film and very pristine and beautiful footage.

It's a must have in my opinion.

Jud - Now I'm singing Yellow Submarine to myself and I blame you. If that was their best effort, they'd be in the bargain bin with Snoopy v. The Red Baron.

I have very little use for the Beatles, and even less for John Lennon. I'm sorry the man died, but not a big fan of his work.

Whoever said they were the best at composing, really, have you read some of the lyrics? Help is a great song, and one or two others.

Do you know what you hear when you play a Yoko Ono/John Lennon album backwards?
"I can't believe you bought this $h!t."

Me thinks we have a critic among us that has a bit of difficulty with the subject he's trying to judge.

Most of us know Paul was both composer AND lyricist on as much of the Beatles work. He and John are at the top of the list of successful musicians AND singer-songwriters.

Labeling Lennon's work as "$h!t" is just wrong.
Oh well...time wounds all heals.

Kris;
some years ago, there was a poll taken by the songwriter's guild in the Western world.
They were asked to name their favorite composition.
These were folks from different musical genres and time periods.

This was the overwhelming favorite voted by songwriters from around the world.
You are entitled to some sort of feeble opinion but pleeeez
Thus has been covered by hundreds of artists in different styles.

The old iphone isn't allowing me to see the video l, but I can only assume from the subject matter that it's John Lennon.

Just because my opinion doesn't jive with yours or the composers doesn't make it feeble. It makes it mine. I don't like his music, and it was worse with Ono. If you like it, more power to you.

I was only pointing out that your opinion does not agree with the songwriter guilds not mine.
I merely expressed that your opinion is very weak compared to their opinion.

Fair enough. I've never really followed the crowd. Case and point, I cant stand hendrix either, except for all along the watchtower.

Bashing John today is a poor judgement call, pick another day if you need to share, bashing him today shows no class. That is just my opinion though....peace

The difference is

> I will get blasted for this, but, he was just another guy walking the planet.

He ended up dead because he was famous.

And Ronald Reagan was just another monkey wearing pants.

Lennon was a fine artist, whose contributions pushed the boundaries of musical convention.

RIP.

Steve

When I start getting all swept eyed over an artist who passed 30 years ago, feel free to jump in. Until then, I like nirvana. Happy?

I disagree, I believe it depends on context and timing. I may think John Doe is an a-hole but spouting it to his friends & family at his funeral after he was murdered, would be thoughtless bashing in my book, a boundary line that should not be crossed.

Regarding Nirvana, their front man Cobain gave up at the end of a shotgun, leaving Frances Bean, his wife, & band to fend for themselves. That is factual.

While I was a Nirvana fan during a passing phase in the 90's, I now realize that their music inspired a generation in all the wrong ways. Cobain was a selfish, drugged out, pus, at least the Foo Fighters had the balls to heal and carry on, good for them. That is my opinion.

Name somebody else. I love Nirvana and I think Cobain was a genius.

And, to me, some of his best stuff sounded like The Beatles.
