Good fire started about 3PM. I'd guess its burned 5000 acres by now. Fire is about 3 miles west of the farm.

Pictures taken about sunset.

Fire breaking ridge.

My camera won't take good pictures at night. Nice view of my neighbors farm junk also!

At one point you could see about 3 miles of the fire along the ridge line (about 11PM).

My property is not in any danger! I been expecting this fire for a few years now. Probably going to be a few more before the year is over, near perfect conditions this year. Bad news for folks that have homes or cabins in the way.

Not sure what they will name this one, its in northern Sanpete County, Utah. Probably be into southern Utah County by tomorrow.

Edit: Named - Wood Hollow Fire

Ours are usually named after the Road on which the first Engine company arrives on scene.

I just got done with a week of Wildland Fire Origin and Cause Training (NFPA921). I noticed Utah had a fire caused by a rifle bullet fired at a range last week. Steel bullets can start fires. They claim there are a lot of Arson fires too.

The Gov has asked folks to not got out shooting, keep their guns in indoor ranges for now. Haven't heard how this fire got started but wouldn't be surprised if it was shooting considering where it did start.

Unless the weather changes the fires so far are just the pre show. If the mountain to the east of us gets on fire it will really be a big one. This fire is more in what we call the hills between about 6000 and 7500 feet. Gamble oak, sage brush, Juniper tress (some Pinion pine) and the grass.

Of coarse, after the fire the next year or two you get the big runoff floods. It's better than the long predicted earth quake due any time. Every environment has its own hazards I suppose.

Nice photos in the news. Some of these were shot from about the same location I took my pictures. Nice show last night.

Who uses steel bullets?

I think it's probably the lead/copper bullets striking a rock and that rock hitting another causing a spark.

That plus some people being too stupid to go over and put the fire out before they leave the range. "Don't worry about it, it'll burn itself out." Heard that one too many times. Don't let those guys use my range anymore. You can leave your brass, but leave trash or a "small fire" and your tail will not be back ever again.

Bear in mind I know very little about shooting or guns.

They said lead bullets are not a fire problem because they are softer.

Maybe they meant steel jacketed bullets, I'm not sure.

There was also a lot of talk about incendiary bullets and tracers starting fires.

They said cigarettes are not as prone to starting fires as is often thought. The relative humidity and fuel moisture both need to be low. Cigarettes are sometimes used in delay devices used by arsonists but that is deliberate, not the result of just a careless smoker.

Some rancher friends of mine think they have lost 600 sheep to the fire. They own the land where I took the pictures of. They also have the old homestead cabin from their grandfather all refurbished and it may be lost also. 4000 acres still in the family after more than 100 years.

I think the fire is well over 10,000 acres by now. About a mile closer to me. I think the fire has traveled about ten miles to the north (wind mostly from the south).

I've put in a few county section markers up there. I'll need to go see how and if they weathered the fire later this year. Aluminum pipes and caps might not survive the heat.
