I've been watching Mars lately..
..as I walk the dogs in the evening.
Look to the east (by southeast) tonight after sunset and you’ll see a bright, slightly red star that rises as the sun sets. Mars is getting pretty close to the Earth. The closest it has been in the last five or six years. But not nearly as close as it was in 2003. We will have to wait until 2287 for that to occur again.
These last few days Mars has been at what is considered opposition. A fancy pants way of saying it is directly opposite the sun in relation to the Earth. This provides a little additional illumination on the red planet at sunset and it appears quite a bit brighter than usual.
Those with telescopes should take up watch. It doesn't take a real powerful telescope to see the recognizable details.
