Mitchell Oregon is a little town in the foothills of the Ochoco Mountains. I’ve cross paths with Mitchell for decades, even stayed there a couple months one memorable summer doing some survey work. I always got a kick out of the sign for the saloon. This is a no nonsense rough and tumble part of Oregon. Home to loggers, ranchers, buckaroos and other independent minded folks who don’t take a cotton to the civilized world and its bothersome rules, crowds and commotion. I like the place. A lot.

So to have a town bar with the name of the “Pink Spur” always seemed out of character:

We drove through Mitchell last summer and the Pink Spur had been torn down. Or relocated to Castro Street in San Francisco.

Glad you managed to take a picture. Awesome picture by the way. Do you have a full resolution one you wouldn't mind sharing.

I have been through Mitchell a half dozen times, but have never been able to stop due to the call of the wild (elk). JRL

Less Fancy Place

Your place is a bit more fancy than the place where I met a client this morning in Deep East Texas. (near the Sam Rayburn Reservoir dam...)

Thanks, glad you like it. The orignal is only 395K. I uploaded it to my photobucket account where you can right click on it and do a "save as" to your computer:

I tried this and it saved back to my computer at the original 395K. I'll honk and wave at you next time I see you out in Wheeler County.

That's a damn fine looking cinder block building Jeff. Ain't rural America the best?

Another Photo – not mine

That old truck is the most photographed truck in Mitchell. I did a search for Mitchell images and a professional photographer named John Barclay from Buck County PA took a bunch of glamour shots of the same rig, apparently many, many years after I took my photo judging by its decay.

The truck:

Barclay's old web site, Painted Hills Oregon gallery: http://archive.barclayphoto.com/2008%20Painted%20Hills.html

Barclay's new web site: http://www.barclayphoto.com/gallery/the-others/

the guy has some good photos.

That he does! Gorgeous work!!

I'd love to see the Painted Hills sometime. Sad I've lived here 16 years or so and haven't been past Pendelton.

Mike,

I seem to end up driving by (not through... usually) Mitchell a couple times every year. I have gone through for a while, do they still have the live black bear downtown?
