When waiting to get a lunch plate at the Stripes Convenience store today, the two oilfield hands in front of me were having a hard communicating with the lady behind the counter. I step in with my superior communication skills and asked them the questions in Tex-Mex as the lady serving didn't speak any Spanish. The dudes completely ignored me. It soon became obvious that they knew less Spanish than they did English. I listened to them talking and I'm pretty sure they were from somewhere in between China and Vietnam or something Oriental/Southeast Asian. We get a lot of migrant workers out here, but 99.99% are Hispanic or Yankee. First OTM (other than Mexican) immigrant oilfield workers I have seen. Wonder if it's the start of a new trend?
We do have a large population of Mennonites in the counties just north of here. It was funny when my 3rd generation Hispanic field crew (who didn't speak much Spanish at all) went up to a white guy at a farm assuming he was the boss and tried to talk to him in English. As a Mennonite migrant from Mexico, he only spoke Spanish and German. He pointed to the Hispanic guy who was the boss and spoke perfect English. I spent the rest of the day accusing my crew of being racists.
Just a curious observations, not a political rant.
