I'm looking for a new gps for my wife. She wants a new one for her car. It really needs to be updatable with new maps on a regular basis. It really would be nice if it had points of interest as well.
We currently have Magellan Roadmate 1200 units, which are pretty basic. Being able to update withoutcosting an arm and a leg is pretty important.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Take a look at the Garmin Nuvi series. I got mine on sale for about $120 and it came with free lifetime map updates (I think).
I bought my wife a Garmin nuvi 3750 last summer, and it's been very good performer. I just got a nuvi 1300 -- a more basic model -- for my truck. (I don't need many bells and whistles.) Judging from the Garmin website, free lifetime map updates put you in the $180+ category.
The GPS units have been going thru a drop in price, check out buy.com and amazon.com for competitive
I recently picked up a nuvi2300 with lifetime maps for $124, free shipping and it was here within 48hrs.
Keep in mind that the update download file is about 1.5 gigabyte, so make sure that won't be a problem
I wholly agree with the recommendations for the Garmin Nuvi series. Ease of use, price, functionality, and intuitive features all make the series very attractive.
The Garmin Nuvi series! I've had mine for 2 years, and I'm lost when my wife takes it on trips with her sister when the sil has another brand. The Nuvi does a better job.
Jimmy,
I read an article a couple of weeks back that suggested that GPS navigational units would be a thing of the past in as little as 10 years. The author believes that smart phones will have apps that take over the function of a GPS device.
If your wife has a smart phone, check into an app for that.
Hope things are well in your world.

Another vote for Garmin Nuvi. I've used Magellan, Tom-Tom and one other one that escapes me at the moment.
I use the Verizon Navigator in my cell phone. There's a monthly charge, but it seems to be updated, and I always have it with me. I do like the larger screen of the built-in GPS in my 2007 Subaru, but it is getting very out of date. However, if any company comes out with a GPS using Antonio Banderas' voice I'm switching. He'll can tell me to make the next legal U-turn any time.
I use the basic "Maps" app on my iPhone that was already installed when I bought it. It does everything the vehicle models do and it has great imagery. Plus, it was free.
Thank you for the replies. The smartphone apps sound interesting, but would probably prefer to have the traditional winshield/ dash model.
I'll check out the Garmin series.
Thanks again,
Jimmy

The cell phone app is good, but it does have limitation. Must have connection to the network to get updates of the maps. I live in rural nowhere. You can get a windshield mount too. But I am like you and like the other units and give 100% to Nuvi series. With the updates, they are nice.
